Change is Afoot at Sam's Print E-mail

If Sir Samuel Alphonse Windsor the 3rd was alive today, he would probably be happy to see the changes that are taking place at his pub and restaurant at Big White. As the tale goes, Sam- an English gentleman who married into French nobility- ventured to the BC mountains following the tragic death of his Baroness. He came to Canada seeking comradeship with the locals and brought with him culture, fine foods, new music. It was here at our very own Big White that he established Snowshoe Sams as a marquis bearing his name and “Ideals of Life”- “Ski every day, party every night, and no worries”. Hmm. Well, if you believe all that I have a green fee at the Big White golf course to sell you.

What is true however is that Sam’s is a place to meet friends, listen to music, and enjoy the local culture. We’re pretty sure that the culture has evolved a bit since Alphonse the 3rd was around! New owners Ian and Juliette Weaver are dedicated to carrying on the tradition of gun-barrels (a local drink that you have to see to believe) and fantastic apres ski that previous owner Brian Spence established when he took over the bar in 1986.

Mountain Treasure Print E-mail

It’s not unusual to see people scouring the mountain for goodies each spring enjoying a hike that often turns into a treasure hunt after they find their first iPod or camera. This was taken to an all new level on Tuesday when one of our contributors came across a Bell Jetranger Helicopter sitting forlornly in the middle of Serwas covered in snow.

As it turns out, last Friday a Canadian Helicopters Bell Jetranger 206 was working on The cel tower near the top of Serwas. The weather began to deteriorate and the pilot made the wise decision to park his chopper and walk down the hill where he was picked up by the  Big White Fire department.

The weather that made the landing necessary dumped more than 50 cm of snow on the machine over the weekend forcing the company to put any plans of a retrieval on ice.

Elevation Outdoors - Out to Help Print E-mail

Elevation Outdoors is a charitable organization that aims to help underprivileged youth in the Kelowna area through positive outdoor experiences. We have been running programs since January of 2008, and have helped a total of 50 youth learn to ride bikes and boards, realize their potential and learn life skills through our programs.

In the winter, our Learn to Shred program operates at Big White from early January to late March.  We teach first time snowboarders to ride while drawing parallels to life experiences throughout our 5-week program.  Themes are set each week that tie in with the progression of learning to ride and to life itself: Patience, Resilience, Confidence, Direction, and Self-esteem. Snowboarding is used as a vehicle to building esteem and life skills, so that youth discover confidence and other assets through learning to ride.

Elevation Outdoors is a charitable organization serving vulnerable and disadvantaged youth in the Kelowna community. Through outdoor experiences and programs, they inspire youth to take on new challenges, and learn about themselves in the process.

Their winter programs take first time snowboarders on a 5-week journey that brings them to Big White Ski Resort twice a week. In the ‘Learn to Shred’ program they teach youth how to snowboard and follow themes each week that parallel life skills and attributes such as patience, resilience, confidence, direction, and high self-esteem. They have had many successes over the past 2 years of programs and are establishing a great reputation for helping youth in the Okanagan Valley.
