Last night the Globe once again hosted their bi-weekly trivia night. The winning team was team “Team Kick Your @##” made up of Gareth, Charity, Doc Mike, and Leanne. Runners up were “Team Green” consisting of Kristina, Ben, Karen, and Todd. The young cocky Fire Hall WEP guys did their best, but came up short. Sorry guys, better luck next time.

Anyone is welcome at the bi-weekly event, but seats go quickly so make you bookings now for an evening of brain teasing fun and good times on the hill. Check the Restaurant guide for more information on the Globe’s weekly events and menu, or click the event calendar for other exciting entertainment on the hill.

What the Fog?? Print E-mail

As a mother of two young boys aged 9 and 5 ‘fog’ is often my state of mind! For the last couple of mornings however, I’ve been able to see clearly that the fog is not in my head alone!

As the usual morning routine goes… my boys and I jumped in the car this morning to make our way down to the school. Unable to see the end of the car bonnet, let alone the end of the road, we were in for somewhat of a harrowing trip! Successful in reaching the Happy Valley carpark we all sat forward on our seats in search of our little Big White Community School … and it was - GONE! Swallowed whole by the white of the ghostly fog.

All of a sudden I HAD to wake up from my usual morning daze and clear my head of my usual fog. This morning’s fog was not my own! It was that of the mountain – it was eating it alive! The boys were extremely excited about the possibility of having a day off due to the fact that their school had disappeared!

If you have been around Big White for a while, you have probably run into, or heard of the legendary Al Reid. Al is a fixture in the Big White community, and we can’t think of a better character to host a Blog on The Worx community site. Al is one of the growing number of year around residents on the hill, and he has plenty to say about life here, and the crazy things that happen- in fact, he is usually present when they happen. Board over to his blog – and let Al put a smile on your face.

Last night we were driving back up to the hill and thought that we would stop off at the Okanagan Observatory site to look at some stars. When we pulled into the site (4 klicks up the Big White road from the turnoff of Highway 33) we were pleasantly surprised to see Guy Mackie of the Okanagan Observatory all bundled up in his parka with his telescope pointed up into the night sky. Guy is the Project Chairperson of the Okanagan Observatory. He was kind enough to give us an impromptu tour of the night sky, and even though we were all shivering standing out in the snowy clearing, we were amazed by what was visible- Jupiter and three of its 63 moons, Andromeda, Seven Sisters, and many, many more. There were star clusters that looked surreal, and galaxies that I had never imagined would be visible from a gravel pit on the way to Big White. Guy dazzled us with his knowledge and ability to engage the interest of our 10 year old daughter who couldn’t stop talking about the stars on the way home.
