Beautification of the Big White Waste Transfer Station Print E-mail

If you happened to be at the Transfer Station last week, you will have seen a pack of kids from the local community school with paint brushes working away at painting some Big White scenery inside the building. You might also have been greeted by Neil Stuart and his {insert the part of the human anatomy where dogs love to stick their noses here} sniffing dogs. But there’s a reason that these dogs crave your scents meandering through their olfactory nerves- they’ve recently been deprived of the rich odour wafting out of the building that has satisfied their cravings for the last few years. And they have their owner to thank for that!

Neil Stuart has recently taken over the task of “cleaning up” the Transfer Station at Big White. Never heard of it? All-right- let’s back up. The Big White Waste Transfer Station is located on the road to Big White, about two klicks West of the entrance

Wing Night Takes Flight Print E-mail

Sam enjoys some tasty honey garlic wingsWednesday Wing Night at Snowshoe Sams has taken off this year. Locals and season workers alike are flocking to Sams every Wednesday night to get their chops around some tasty chicken wings. So popular are the wings this year that Sams SOLD OUT early the first week, and have since sold 4,610 and 4,450 wings respectively over the last two weeks!! That’s a lot of chickens!!

According to Rick, the bar manager at Snowshoe Sams, wings were definitely not this popular last season. Rick says, “It varies every year from the people that are here. It’s a nice inexpensive meal, and I personally think they’re good!”

When I spoke with Lauren, a season worker here at Big White, she insisted that “wings are a lot better than two minute noodles, but they’re still only four dollars”, adding, “I love it! It’s fun, cheap food and everyone’s there.”

Chilling on the Ice Print E-mail

Having almost lost my extremities due to the big chill up on the hill on Saturday I decided to leave it to the die-hards for the rest of the brutally brisk weekend and stay down low off the lifts.

As my husband happened to be one of those ‘die-hards’ I made the most of my Sunday as a ‘widow left out in the cold’ by taking the kids down to the ice rink in Happy Valley.

I must say when it comes to ice-skating I don’t have much of a clue. I reckon I could speak for a few of us Aussies when I say that most of us don’t know the difference between a Lutz jump and a Backward Swizzle, let alone a Hook Check and a Slap Shot! What the puck??

Ice rinks are few and far between the beaches and deserts back home. From the Big Banana Ice Rink to the Penrith Ice Palace I’m not quite sure that we take it all too seriously (although I’m sure the Australian Ice Skating Federation might disagree).

Rally Weekend Ends at Big White Print E-mail
Sunday, 06 December 2009 19:52

Rally weekend is over for this year, but not without some memorable moments.... Happy Valley was filled with excitement and noise on this crisp clear day. Yesterday's conditions for the SnowX were far more challenging with fresh powder and plenty of wind blinding the drivers, but today looked like a lot more fun for everyone, including the spectators. See you all next year.

Killer 2009/10 Park Print E-mail

Photo contributed by Laurence Crossman-EmmsSaturday the Telus Terrain Park opened with a whole new set up! So like most crazy riders who love to shred the park, I was naturally up on the mountain nice and early to check out the various features that the killer 09/10 park crew have been working on. Plenty of 50-50’s, boardslides, presses, spins and other various tricks were stomped down and enjoyed by all dudes and chicks on the assortment of features.

The professionally constructed park consists of a number of small to medium fun boxes and kickers, however, this is only the beginning of the 09/10 park season and many larger and technical features including rails, a boardercross track and a half pipe! Sweet as!

Don’t miss the upcoming events scheduled later on this month at the Telus Park. The Telus Park Rail Jam Series staring on the 27th of December is the first of the season’s events, but there is going to be a whole lot more in 2010. So come check em out, it’s going to be an awesome winter.
