Two weeks past and it happened again; the rug moving strangely like there was a mouse underneath it, but it couldn’t be. It was far too big the thing was drawn to food like some sorta magnet. On the first occasion it happened I was expecting guests when it appeared and went straight for the turkey dinner I had set out for Mr. and Mrs. Upin. But being stuck under the rug it had a slight speed disadvantage, so I got there first I held it aloft, the bump retreated to where it had come from. I put the turkey down, drew a shaky breath and there was Mr. and Mrs. Upin “What in Gods name was that!” Mr. upin roared. Over the next week and six days food began to disappear right, left and center. But on the two week mark I Determined to catch this thing so I set out a loaf of warm bread picked up my lightest chair and crept to where the bump kept appearing. It came out less cautious this time (probably because it had been stealing my food for the past two weeks) I waited until it was halfway across the room then brought the chair down hard. A sharp squealing “Ow” came from under the carpet. I ripped It up and grabbed a sooty ankle (yeah an ankle) and wrenched as hard I could. The sooty ankle was followed by a sooty child with clothes that looked like they might have been with her since birth.“What I might ask are you doing missy” I inquired She stuck out he bottom lip in a practiced get-out-of-trouble look “just looking for some food sir” “Well you could have asked” “really” she said excitedly “of course I would have been more than happy to oblige, were do you live” “Under your house” she replied “well I have an extra room upstairs an-” “You’d let me stay here” “well yes” she ran at me as hard as she could and hugged me fiercely and saying “oh thank you thank you sir”. And so today I just came from the adoption center with my adopted daughter lyra. The end
