In this spot we have a summary of what will be featured on the HD widescreen that we all have above our heads every night. This week's star summary was put together by Dave Gamble and Coleen O'Hare - both volunteers from the Okanagan Observatory. Note: Don't get scared off with the "ten dollar words"- explanations are given later in the text.

Highlights for the week of August 29 - Sept 4, 2010

Tues. Aug. 31 - For another early-season look at the beautiful little open star cluster the Pleiades, look for it to the left of the waning, slightly gibbous Moon in the predawn sky.

Wed. Sept. 1 - This evening at dusk, Venus, the star Spica in the constellation Virgo and the planet Mars will form an almost straight line low in the west-southwest about a half hour after sunset. You will need a good low western horizon to see them.

Thurs. Sept. 2 - For the next two weeks the Milky Way can be seen arching across the sky from northeast to south after dark. We are actually looking out along the plane of the Milky Way galaxy and the myriad stars in its disk. To either side the view is out into outer space.

Sat. Sept. 4 - Tonight Mars is just to the upper right of the star Spica which in turn is now double that distance to the left of bright Venus. This is a chance to see the 'dance of the planets' in real time.

The Okanagan Observatory is 4 kms up Big White Rd from Hwy 33. That makes it only 35 kms from Rutland Rd. Club members will have their telescopes pointed at many wondrous celestial objects. We will be pointing out the Milky Way and constellations with special astronomical laser pointers as we tour the night sky. More information can be found at www.okanaganobservatory.ca. These free public viewing nights will continue every Friday until mid June. Phone the Okanagan Observatory Event Phone, 250-300-8SKY (8759) for an event update after 3 pm on Friday.

Mongol Rally Charity Dinner Print E-mail
Monday, 05 April 2010 18:54

On the 24th of July this year four intrepid residents of the Okanagan, including one of our own, Al Reid, will set off from Goodwood near London, England bound for Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia as participants in this years Mongol Rally. No small undertaking, this trip will cover some 10,000 miles & include 15 countries, several deserts, mountain passes 15,000 ft high, unbelievably crap or non-existant roads, corrupt officials, wayward camels, bowls of pure botulism masquerading as food, more corrupt officials imposing arbitrary "fines", yaks ( I hope ), & each other as our veneer of civilized personae gets eroded away by the dust & heat & endless travel.

Okanagan Observatory: Sky Theatre a Go! Print E-mail
Monday, 29 March 2010 09:45

What’s an observatory without a planetarium? Well, still an awesome place but with the addition of the Sky Theatre this year, the Okanagan Observatory will be able to offer a unique experience.

We are very lucky to have a natural amphitheatre at the Observatory site, just above the main area, and it is here where our Sky Theatre will be constructed. Benches will be installed on a gently sloped area facing a presentation area that includes a large screen. This allows us to conduct Sky Tours, pointing out celestial wonders with laser pointers and on overcast nights, we can give presentations or movies projected onto the screen.
